Shange took her African name, which means “she who comes with her own things” and she “who walks like a lion,” in the mid-Seventies. Her play “or colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf” was such a powerful play I attended in the 70’s. Her award winning works are beautiful poetic stories of the invisible and the bright.
